Upcoming meetings...transforming the future of our schools

I want to thank you for joining me and participating in the LGUSD School Board, LGEF Board, Home and School Club, Budget Advisory Council, LG3 Sustainability Committee, Resource Council, and other meetings concerning the financial challenges and changes facing our school district. In particular, I encourage you to attend tonight's LGEF Board Meeting starting at 7:15 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center.

As you know, the Trigger Cuts initiated by the state of California in February are just the latest in years of continuing financial shortfalls that impact our district and our schools. Over the last three years, the Los Gatos Union School District has lost over $3M of State funding with no offsetting increase in property tax or local funding.

It's time to fundamentally change the way that we do business.

To help build a new foundation for the 21st century, we need to reform our government so that it is more efficient, more transparent, and more creative.

That will demand new thinking and a new sense of responsibility for

every dollar that is spent. ~Barack Obama

Although painful, this and all other budget cuts can be an opportunity for change. And I sincerely thank all of the parents, teachers, staff and community members who have and are offering to step up and implement better ways to fund and use the monies we have.

With that in mind, I encourage each of you to participate and partner in any of the upcoming meetings. See details below and please note change of locations. If I have missed a crucial meeting, let me know the time and place and I will add it to the list.

Please forward this email to your friends, co-workers and neighbors in the broader community. As a community, what we do at our schools now… impacts everyone in the Town of Los Gatos, the future prosperity for generations to come and your children today.

Measure E-Lexington Update March 6, 2012

On Tuesday, March 6, 2012, District representatives, along with engineering and architectural consultants, will be updating the Board of Trustees on the District’s response to the Department of Conservation - California Geological Survey (CGS) review comments for Lexington Elementary School that were discussed at the October 18, 2011 Board meeting. In addition, an update of the projected escalation costs for Measure E programs will be included. This update is for informational purposes only; no action will be taken.

On Tuesday, February 28th, the Board of Trustees will decide how to proceed. This is not an easy situation, and there are no easy fixes. Everyone in our District will be touched by these decisions. It is important to remember that we are dealing with our colleagues and friends - and they all deserve our respect during this tough time.

I encourage every parent and staff member in the Los Gatos community to attend Tuesday’s meeting and take the time to read the Board packet materials in detail. See details below and please note there is a change of location from prior meetings.

Los Gatos Union School District Working on the Budget Shortfall

The state of California has cut our budget.

Property taxes are not enough.

The District started the 2011-2012 school year already behind.

The combination of these three factors means that we are forced to cut our budget. We do not have another choice. These cuts will take place over the next two school years — 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 — if the Los Gatos Union School District is to remain healthy and strong.

The Board packet to be posted by Friday, February 24th on the District website at http://www.lgusd.k12.ca.us/ will contain detailed information about ways we can reduce expenses. On Tuesday, February 28th, the Board of Trustees will decide how to proceed.

This is not an easy situation, and there are no easy fixes. Everyone in our District will be touched by these decisions. That is why I have been working so closely with each of our principals — Rosanne Adona, Lisa Fraser, David Freed, Jim LaTorre, Lisa Reynolds, Dana Steele, Susan von Felten — and with our dedicated District office administrators – Leslie Paulides, Jason Pedersen, Maggi Reser, Marla Rodriguez, Bitsey Stark - to find solutions. They all understand the budget deficit facing our District and have had the chance to comment on and contribute to the plan. Most of the ideas that you will read about have come from our principals and administrators. I want to thank them all, again, for their time, their work, their dedication, and their commitment.

I have also read the comments provided by the parents and staff in the recent annual survey and have highlighted what each of you had to say for the Board and community. Those highlights were presented at our February 6th Board meeting; expect more details of the survey results on February 28th.

I now encourage every parent and staff member in the Los Gatos Unified School District to attend Tuesday’s meeting. See details below and please note there is a change of location from prior meetings.

We need to work together so that we can continue to offer a K-8 comprehensive, competitive and consistent educational program to the more than 3,000 students in our five schools. Every school is important to me. Every child in every school is important to me. I also stand behind and support the more than 275 staff members who come to work every day to help our children succeed. Again, let me say this is not an easy situation, and there are no easy fixes.

LGUSD Budget Deficit 2012

As the public grasps to understand the Governor’s proposed budget cuts for education over the next 10 months, it is my intent to keep you informed regarding the financial uncertainties facing the Los Gatos Union School District. It has become apparent that basic aid districts (e.g. LGUSD) receive little funding from the State and receive the majority of their funding in property tax revenues.

What does this mean for LGUSD?

LGUSD has already reduced it’s State revenues to less than half a million dollars of our $26 million general fund. This loss of revenue has resulted in a structural deficit for LGUSD with expenditures exceeding revenue over the next several years. This budget shortfall specifically comes from a reduction in local, state and federal funding sources as well as an increase in the cost of maintaining our programs.

Challenges for LGUSD

The State budget has not been approved and districts must plan for uncertainty as March 15th approaches. For all districts, March 15th marks a critical time for our staff. It is state law that certificated teachers must be notified by March 15th if they cannot be guaranteed employment next fall. To date, property taxes are not rebounding quickly and our enrollment continues to gradually increase. This puts further pressure on our overall budget, and we continue to be challenged to do more with less. Therefore, a strategy for reducing the deficit is vital for continuing to provide LGUSD students a world-class, competitive education, while retaining high quality teachers. At this time, no decisions have been made. I ask for your support as we prepare for the challenges ahead.

I invite you to join the Board of Trustees and Administration as we begin to diligently implement cost reduction strategies for FY 2012-13 and FY 2013-14 to help trim down District expenditures given the uncertainty that has surrounded Sacramento and the State’s ailing budget. The spirit of this flagship initiative was to convene leaders from around the District to discuss and share strategies to strengthen the quality of education for Los Gatos students. Annual Survey Update

There is still time to take the LGUSD Annual survey. As of this morning, Tuesday, January 31st, the response rate is as follows:

991 parent responses totaling a 32% participation rate
170 LGUSD staff responses totaling a 61% participation rate

Remember, your opinions are most important to LGUSD leadership and this survey only works if enough constituents participate. This 10-15 minute anonymous survey asks questions about all aspects of the District and aims to provide important information to leadership on how effectively LGSUD is performing, and most importantly how effectively the program meets the needs of LGUSD students.

Given the State's fiscal uncertainty and future challenges for LGUSD, your feedback will be instrumental in planning for the 2012-13 school year. I am seeking input from all members of the learning community from this year's Annual Survey.

It is critical that I hear from everyone in our community…parents, principals, teachers, and staff. A high response rate is key to corroborating survey results. Please pay close attention to the last question on the survey where we ask you to rank your top three priorities…class size, art, music, technology, library, physical education, literacy support, etc. We seek a 60-70% participation rate from the community to gauge honest and valuable opinions that will provide insight into future program improvements.

The survey will be open until the end of the day, Tuesday, January 31st. It is my intent that we share a summary of the findings with the community and the Board of Trustees at the February 7, 2012 Board meeting as they plan for the 2012-13 school year.

Administrative Update

It is with heartfelt words that I write this letter to inform you that our Principal, David Freed, will be leaving Lexington School at the end of June 2012. Mr. Freed has been offered, and has accepted, a position as Principal at the Munich International School in Starnberg, Germany. The Board of Trustees will be accepting Mr. Freed’s resignation at the February 7th Board meeting.

While this news came unexpectedly, the Administrative Team is taking the necessary steps to ensure a smooth transition for the 2012-13 school year. It is our intent to build on our strong momentum and continue in our current positive direction. I am fortunate to have the administrative talents and experience of our Principals, teachers and staff to guide our future and ground Lexington School through this transition.

Lexington School has benefited greatly under the vision, guidance and aspirations of Mr. Freed. On behalf of the students, families and staff, both past and present, I offer our sincere appreciation for his tireless efforts in contributing to the Los Gatos community. We wish him and his family the very best in their new endeavors.

AlertNow Automated Attendance Call System

We are excited to announce the implementation of the AlertNow Automated Attendance Call System effective Thursday, January 12, 2012.

If a child is absent from school, parents and guardians will receive an automated attendance message through the Los Gatos Union School District’s AlertNow system. The system allows attendance secretaries at all five schools to log attendance and notify parents of any unverified absence in the timeliest manner possible. We operate the "safe call" system to notify parents as early as possible if a child does not arrive at school as expected. Please note that parents should still call the school attendance office to report their child/children's absence from school anytime your child will be absent or late to school.

Should you have any questions or concerns about the new attendance notification system, please do not hesitate to contact your school office.

February is Registration Month

Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten (TK) registration packets for the 2012-13 school year will be available beginning Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at the following schools in the Los Gatos Union School District:

Blossom Hill Elementary School

Daves Avenue Elementary School

Lexington Elementary School

Louise Van Meter Elementary School

Children who will be 5 years old on or before November 1, 2012 will be eligible to register for placement in August 2012. Birth certificate, proof of residency, and immunization records will be required before your child enters school in the fall. Only completed packets as requested in the enrollment checklist will be accepted starting Monday, February 13, 2012 at each of the elementary school sites. For more information, click here.

Holiday Message

Dear Los Gatos Union School District Families & Staff:

Another year has passed and while life just gets busier and busier, the holidays are a time of year for reflection and celebration. I hope the holiday finds you among friends and loved ones, grateful and at ease as we take this traditional hiatus from our daily routines.

I recently had an experience – one of those experiences every educator is lucky to have. I received an email from a former student thanking me for what I had done over a decade ago as his 2^nd grade teacher and his message reminded me of the book, Life’s Little Lessons. The book’s message is simple…our actions do affect others and the choices we make create a future for us that cannot be avoided. In our choices we can choose amongst many things. Often we have so many choices we forget the little things…a simple word of encouragement, a smile, a word of comfort. Even a simple thank you can make such a difference in someone’s life…and it only takes a second. Please join me in thanking our teachers, staff and parents, without whom the learning community in Los Gatos would not be possible. It is not the work of just one person but rather the collection of many different miracles that make LGUSD unique.

This month marks my six-month anniversary with LGUSD and I have been constantly amazed at the generosity and hard work from the teachers, staff, and parent volunteers. As I have travelled around the different school sites, I have been struck by resilience and creativity, even in the face of challenging financial times. Across all our sites we advanced our strategic initiatives, while holding true to our values and commitment to educating the whole child. Everyone has pitched in and helped in so many ways that my gratitude for all of them is overflowing. The commitment to our students has been incredible. I am so inspired working alongside some truly amazing people and imagine all that we can continue to do together.

Looking back, this year was framed as the year of building a much stronger organization for the benefit of our students. It has been a very rough year for the California economy at home and school, and public schools will continue to face challenges ahead. It has been a time of monumental tests of our strength and spirit as we adjusted to new realities while continuing to move forward with our key strategic initiatives. LGUSD staff remains focused on what we can control…doing what is right for our students. It is this strong commitment that gives me confidence; it is this sharp focus that will ultimately help all of us grow stronger and more prosperous together.

Looking ahead, I am confident that we will we enter the New Year renewed in spirit and determination, and prepared for more progress and success. The steps we take today will define the character of LGUSD for many years to come. In my daily contacts with you, I sense that all of us have confidence in our future and in the future of the students we serve. I am deeply grateful that through all of these challenges, we have emerged stronger, more capable and well‑positioned for the possibilities ahead.

On behalf of our entire LGUSD staff and Board of Trustees, I want to wish you and your family a safe, joyous and happy Holiday season and a prosperous New Year. May these holidays be a time of recreation and relaxation with family and friends.

A Thankful Heart

With the Thanksgiving holiday upon us, it is a special time to appreciate all that we are grateful for. November is a wonderful month to be thankful for many things in our everyday lives. It is a time to express a heart of gratitude to family and friends, and a time when we can stop and realize our countless blessings.

I have a Thanksgiving ritual that I follow no matter where I am or the company around me. It begins as soon as I start my day. When I wake up, I think of one thing I am grateful for that happened this year…my husband’s support. As the day progresses, I cherish every small moment and think about more things…sunny days, a good book, and the new friendships I have made at LGUSD. I have no shortage of things to remember. By the time the Macy’s Day Parade ends and the football games begin, my mind is quietly full of gratitude.

We at LGUSD are fortunate to have an incredible learning community. Our schools are a special place due to your efforts and our incredible staff. I believe that gratitude is one of the most important virtues we can teach our children.

I want to thank each of you for your support, your patience, your contributions, and insights that help us understand our students better. We are fortunate in so many ways and yet we so frequently focus on what we lack versus what we have. This Thanksgiving, I encourage you to express your gratitude to your family, to your child’s teacher, and to your friends. I hope that these days will create special memories for you, your children, and your families.

Finally, I am reminded that we should be kind to ourselves during the holiday season. A quote from Thomas Drier says it well: “If we are ever to enjoy life, now is the time – not tomorrow or next year. The best preparation for a better life next year is a full, complete, harmonious, joyous life this year.”

Emergency Operations Training

On Thursday, November 10, 2011, all 300+ LGUSD employees will receive emergency operations training that includes specific emergency assignments in District-wide and school-wide emergency situations that follow Incident Command System (ICS) and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) protocols. During this hands-on workshop, emergency operations will be reviewed by job descriptions and site specific details. In the event of an emergency, all District employees become disaster relief workers at the school and District sites.

This is an important announcement from the Los Gatos Union School District. This message is to introduce AlertNow, our new rapid communication service. With AlertNow, I will be able to deliver important information to you quickly and reliably. With this service, I will also be able to reach you promptly in the event of an urgent matter via email and phone.

AlertNow also provides you with additional ways to be notified in the event of an emergency. Parents/staff have the option of receiving text messages from the District in the event of an emergency. Parents/staff must opt-in to receive this messaging service because there may be additional charges for text messaging based on the contract with your personal phone company.

To sign up to receive this text service:

2. Enter the six digit pin: lgusd5 and click Op-in

3. Provide a primary and optional secondary cell phone number

4. Agree to the terms and conditions, then submit the information.

LGUSD Imagine 2022 Community Meetings

Here we are…the first week of November and it is already a busy, busy time…not unlike the rest of the year. Did you know that our school district is also quickly approaching a big milestone - our 150^th anniversary in 2013? To prepare for our future, I would like to personally invite you to the Los Gatos Union School District (LGUSD) Community Meetings focused on the “Imagine LGUSD” facilities master planning process. Imagine LGUSD is a key component of the District’s five-year initiatives, and is a means to gather information to review the District’s educational program offerings, determine long-term capacity needs, and help guide where future investments need to be made. Though not a construction blueprint, it will serve as a back-drop to our long-term goals for providing a 21^st century learning and teaching environment.

During this first phase of the Imagine LGUSD plan, the District will look to a diverse group of stakeholders to participate in community meetings for feedback for the betterment of quality educational experiences for students. Simultaneously, your input will be valuable in the development of a strategy for future program delivery supported by academic rationale and enrollment data in the areas of facility improvements, student demographic studies, capacity, safety, and sustainability.

In an effort to accommodate as many community members as possible, we have scheduled six community meetings at various locations within the District during the months of November and December 2011. Measure E–Lexington Update

On Wednesday, 10/19 at approximately 12:05 a.m., the Board of Trustees took action and approved a scope of work in the amount of $300K to begin additional work necessary at Lexington School for California Geologic Survey approval. While the goal is to continue to be shovel-ready by June 2012, we are also committed to keeping the community informed every step of the way in the case that the Trustees will need to take additional action as to whether or not to proceed as planned, or to consider other alternatives for Lexington School.

In addition, the Trustees directed District Administrators to update the 10-year facilities master plan to address current and future capacity needs in the District. Superintendent Abbati and Assistant Superintendent Leslie Paulides will be scheduling meetings this fall with members of the community to discuss how best to plan for future growth in the District. Please stay tuned as we develop a scope and timeline.
